Why Today is a Good Day to Celebrate Books

We’re almost midyear, and a lot has happened over the last six months—I’m sure for you, too! But today is special because it’s Get Caught Reading Month, and as an Author┃Agent┃Advocate, I have a lot to celebrate on that front. Read on…

AUTHOR: Recently, I received a great honor. Not only was I interviewed by Impact Maker Dan Albaum, but my story is also included in his upcoming book The Giving Edge. #humbled. Talk about a wonderful honor.

And thanks to all of you who submitted requests for more career books. I’ve added a few more to my Amazon page.

AGENT: I’m really digging my role as a Literary Agent for The Purcell Agency. The insight is fascinating, the learning curve is steep, and the energy is palpable. What a great team to work with, and our fearless leader is not only one of the kindest people you’d ever meet, but a champion of authors.

This month, I’ve been spending quite a bit of time writing Edit Letters. These correspondences are a delight to create, although painstakingly tedious, but I liken them to a Love Letter from Agent to Author. I’ve received these as an author and as an agency client and have written quite a few from the agent desk. Why am I so enthused about sharing my thoughts on these little gems? Well, first it’s that “yellow light” indicating you’re almost there. Of course, there are no guarantees, but you’re on your way.

ADVOCATE: The original impetus behind Books Uplift is well, uplifting! Great books, authors, writers, and industry professionals who work tirelessly to bring great books to awesome readers.

But I also advocate for charities, and this month my heart was captured by a little charity outside of Phoenix, Arizona, called Mexican Mutts. Under the guidance of Kim Kroger Woodhouse, the team at Rancho Feliz (another awesome charity) worked to build shelters for stray, unwanted, and uncared-for dogs. They’ve raised roofs (doghouse roofs, that is) along with finances and medical care to help these beautiful beings survive, thrive, and find homes forever.

A lifelong lover of written language, Sherian Brown holds an MS in cardiopulmonary science, yet quickly gravitated toward medical policy revision in her nonclinical duties. Subsequently, she expanded her editing to include fiction and joined WordWiser Ink, a boutique editorial company specializing in copyediting and proofreading. She has since worked with esteemed publishing houses, including HarperCollins Publishers, Penguin Random House, Row House Publishing, Ohio University Press, Zando, and Ulysses Press, as well as a myriad of independent authors.

John Lim is an author and the former host and executive of the Moving Forward podcast, which ended a 10-year run with 500 episodes in 2025. John is working on his next book due out later this year, about his time as an actor for the popular online series Star Trek: New Voyages, and currently teaches classes for the Johns Hopkins Odyssey and Osher programs on self-help topics, including how to write and self-publish your first book, decluttering your home, and getting started with e-commerce.
